The Academy Chapel is the number one man-made tourist attraction in Colorado and one of the most recognized buildings in the country. Designed by Walter Netsch, Jr of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), the building has received International acclaim. Important to the Pikes Peak Region and to Colorado, the Chapel is also a treasured asset to our Nation. Since it opened in 1960, the building has leaked resulting in decades long, costly repairs. This talk will cover the design history of the Chapel, its inspirations, the original cost reductions that resulted in the leakage problem, and the meticulous multi-year restoration project the Academy has embarked on to fix the problem and return the Chapel to its original design intent.
